Mausoleums appeared in the ancient world starting with tombs or rulers and elite of Ancient Egypt and Babylonian kingdoms. The concept of construction of impressive resting places for deceased did not vanish in the times of antiquity. It survived through thousands of years and it exists today.

In the modern European and American period the idea of building a mausoleum as the final resting place for gentry and nobility became popular again. Today mausoleum is construction located in a cemetery, churchyard or on a private land. It can be a small or lavish construction with a burial chamber inside which contains the remains of the deceased. The place of containment or the burial vault can have either a sarcophagus or just interment niche.
